Vasa history introduction

The Vasa sank on 10 August 1628 in Stockholm's harbour on her maiden voyage. With time it was forgotten where she lay. During the 1950s, a private researcher, Anders Franzen, began to search for her. He knew that wooden ships had been uniquely preserved in Osterjon's brackish water. In more salty water, wood is rapidly destroyed by the ship worm, Teredo Navalis.
